ASN 2020 European Conference: Nationalism and Populism in Semi-Peripheries:
Central and Eastern European Responses to Global Challenges (Cluj-Napoca,
Romania, 2-4 July 2020)

Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB), in cooperation with the Association for the
Study of Nationalities (ASN), is pleased to announce a joint conference,
"Nationalism and Populism in Semi-Peripheries: Central and Eastern European
Responses to Global Challenges" which will be held from 2 to 4 July, 2019
in Cluj, Romania. The conference will be co-organized by the Faculty of
Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences and the Faculty of
Sociology and Social Work of the Babeș-Bolyai University, together with the
Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities (ISPMN).

The main subjects of the conference will be 1) the perceptions,
representations, and realities of the semi-peripheral condition, and 2)
nationalism and populism. We particularly welcome papers and panels devoted
to the following themes:

   - Demographic nationalism, demographic panic, and their link to
   political processes
   - Censuses and the “regimes of counting” associated with ethnic
   identities
   - Migratory processes and perceptions of migration (both in- and out-
   migration)
   - Minority policy regimes and the challenges of the current nationalist
   and populist turn
   - Explanations of nationalist populism, its emergence and types in
Central and Eastern Europe and beyond
   - Forms and trends of nationalism and nation building, including
   cross-border nationalism and kin-state agency
   - Minority mobilization
   - The use of big data in ethnic and nationalism studies

The conference also invites papers and panels devoted to broad questions of
state-building and nationalism, ethnicity, borders, populations, national
identity and other related topics, with a special focus on Central and
Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the post-Yugoslav countries, Russia, the
post-Soviet republics, Turkey, and Greece. Comparative investigations and
case studies carried out in other parts of the world that offer lessons for
the conference’s main geographic area are also welcome. We expect
contributions situated within the disciplines of history, sociology,
political science, anthropology, cultural studies, geography, economics,
law, and related disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary and
multidisciplinary studies, based on various methodologies.
